Re: Is fast food really this expensive

The 4 or 5 Mc Donalds I visited in the USA (in NY and NJ) seemed to be stuck in the past. They looked old and they had the "old" menus with only the classic items without all the stuff that seems to have been added on the Canadian side in the last 5 or 6 years. (No McWrap, no angus burgers, none of "special" coffees that are not really coffee anymore...)

Am I crazy or just ended up stopping at bad Mc Donalds?

Must be a regional or franchise thing - I stop regularly at the on off I-81 in Cortland, NY and it's relatively clean, modernized (has a fireplace and a raised seating area and all sorts of other updated design elements) and the the menu is essentially the same as here (minus some of the regional "specialty" items like Poutine or the promotional "item of the month" Canada is running -- but had their own promo items up on the board) - screens were all updated flat-panel monitors with the changing displays, they had the "order number" based meal fulfillment system for dining-in, etc -- they didn't have the "order yourself" kiosks set up yet last time I was in there (about 6 months ago) but I wouldn't be surprised if they arrived by now.

Things I did notice:
Lower prices (about 20% -- commensurate with exchange rate)
All kids meals comes with "Fries & another side" (here it's fries *or* apple slices) and they get 6 mcnuggets instead of 4.
There was more toppings on the US burgers (that is, I got a quarter pound BLT, and there was 3 pieces of bacon and 3 pieces of lettuce and 2 slices of tomato. In Canada you get 2 bacon, 2 lettuce, 1 tomato).
They didn't have TV's in the dining area (here I've typically seen a TV on CBC Newsworld or something like that).

Otherwise -- not too much different. Fries tasted the same. Coke tasted the same. Pretty much standard fare.

Want a culture shock? Eat at a Wendy's in Tokyo :) Been there - done that - have the t-shirt (literally - they sell Wendy's T-Shirts at some of their locations in Japan - or at least did a few years back - and I had to buy one for the novelty of it!).
