Case in point: Remember the big to-do a few years ago where Jamie Oliver was campaigning against the Pink Sludge? Yeah, that stuff was always illegal in Canada.
I'm not necessarily saying that the food supply in Canada is inherently safer than the US, but I *am* saying that we have significantly higher standards pretty much across the board for things like filler and where the protein can actually come from. Coupled with a smaller supply, and it's really not surprising that prices are cheaper in the US. Serving sizes are bigger too... though we're catching up on that front.
What'll really make you scratch your head is that 60 years ago, your $0.25 got you a 3oz burger at McD's. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $3.10. They *still* sell that 3oz burger for about the same price (adjusted for inflation). Nobody orders it. They'd rather spend 3x as much in order to get a Quarter Pounder (tm) -- blissfully unaware of the fact that 1/4lb is 4oz. It really isn't that much more burger, and if you *really* want more meat, just order an extra patty on the 3oz burger.
It reminds me of a story I read about Wendy's trying to introduce a Third-Pounder burger to compete with McD's 1/4 Pounder. They ended up pulling it, because the math-literate masses thought that 1/3 was less than 1/4.
Lower prices (about 20% -- commensurate with exchange rate)
